The best cocktail place in the historical centre, Bar del Fico was recently featured in the Guardian’s ‘top ten places to drink in Rome’. Not only do they prepare mouth watering cocktails nut they lay out a fantastic ‘aperitivo’ – early evening buffet and drinks- with a great selection of freshly cooked pasta, vegetables and pizza. The clientele is colorful to say the least and the people watching is great! Chin chin!

Not for the faint hearted, Bar San Calisto is as spit and sawdust as they come! Tucked in one of Rome’s liveliest neighborhoods, this bar offers the cheapest drinks in town as well as a fascinating insight into the cross section of regulars that frequent it – from students, to pensioners, to the young and glam to the not so glam! Is definitely an experience not to be missed! They also do surprisingly delicious home-made gelato!

This is a classic Italian enoteca (wine bar); don’t be afraid to ask the waiters for help sifting thru their wine bible before deciding on a bottle. They serve a decent amount of main courses, but I prefer to come here for appetizers and wine, then move on to a restaurant for dinner.

There is a bar/restaurant near the Vatican that serves up the best cocktails I’ve ever had in Italy. Their sister restaurant is nearby and also worth a visit: PASSEGUAI (Via Pomponio Leto 1). Go to the 2nd one for wine, local meat and cheeses.
