When Is The Best Time To Visit Rome?

I am writing this article to those that are wondering when is the best time to visit Rome. I have been asked this question many times from our visitors, and this valid question has usually two answers, in my opinion.

1- Anytime!

2- During the “in-between” season

 The end of September and beginning of October is the best time to visit Rome. 

The peak of the most heavy tourist season is at its end, school has started, and the streets are far less crowded. The temperature is much more comfortable, with highs between 19-25ºC/66-77ºF and lows between 12-15ºC/53-59ºF. Indeed, the weather is definitively pleasant and most days are sunny with a general low chance of rain. Therefore it is not as warm as it is in summer, where the temperatures can reach as high as 45ºC/113ºF, making it it quite hard to enjoy a stroll at noon. 

April and May are also some of the best months to come to the Eternal City for the same reasons; it is not yet too crowded with tourists, and also because the weather it is not too hot or too cold. You may find some rainy days but as long as you have practiced holding an umbrella in one hand and a gelato in the other, everything should be fine.

July and August are the hottest months of the year, and also have the highest number of tourists. The good news though, is that throughout Rome (especially in the city center) you will find lots of fountains where you can grab a cool drink, and refresh yourself with some water on your face. The Roman winter is mild, with some sunny days but also a healthy amount of rain. It can be a bit cold with temperatures between 3-10ºC/37-50ºF. This is definitively the time with the least amount of tourists, so if you don’t mind packing warm clothes it is also the time where you can enjoy nearly empty museums. You can also enjoy some amazing food (as traditional Roman cuisine can be heavy and not very suitable for hot weather) and experience Rome’s Christmas vibes and its fabulous winter lights around the city.
